The Federal Foreign Office has made up to 500,000 euro available to help flood victims in South-East Asia. Part of this money will go to the Thai Red Cross and one of the country’s local evacuation centres. The rest will be used to fund medical care and relief items for flood victims in the Philippines.
Already last week Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle sent messages of condolence to his counterparts and offered humanitarian assistance for the flood victims.
The Federal Foreign Office is keeping a close watch on the situation in the South-East Asian countries affected by the floods and stands ready to provide prompt support for humanitarian relief operations as needed.
Unusually heavy monsoon rains and a series of tropical cyclones have caused severe flooding in several countries in South-East Asia. Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, Viet Nam and Laos have all been hit.
According to UN figures, the floods have affected some 2.4 million people in Thailand and claimed 320 lives. In the Philippines over 4 million people have been affected and 102 deaths reported.
In all these countries the national authorities are working intensively with non-governmental organizations to organize the relief effort.
