Bribery query: Trial under way for PM’s cousin [Hun Sen's cousin charged with corruption]

Bribery query
A corruption trial against Prime Minister Hun Sen’s cousin Dy Proem, who is alleged to have paid a US$200,000 bribe to sway favour in a land dispute, began yesterday.

Presiding Judge Duch Kimsorn said yesterday that only new evidence would be examined in the court’s retrial of Dy Proem, who allegedly bribed an official to issue a fake March 18 Council of Ministers
statement awarding disputed land to him in Dangkor district’s Kakab Commune.

“This is the second time the court has conducted the trial for Mr Seng Yean and Dy Proem over the allegation of corruption,” he said.

Seng Yean, former deputy general director of the Inspection Department at the Ministry of National Assembly, Senate Relations and Inspection, is the man who allegedly received the bribe.

The charges followed a complaint from Phnom Penh landowner Houth Sarom, who claims that, unlike 120 other families, she never sold her land to Dy Proem.

Long Narin, lawyer for the Ministry of National Assembly, Senate Relation and Inspection, said there is documented proof the pair are guilty.

Neither of the accused could be reached for comment yesterday.

I think it is a show trial. Soon, Hun Sen will intervene to release his cousin. He tried once before and she was released on bail. Later, she will be exonerated of all charges completely. This is justice Hun Sen's style, only the poor and the powerless are jailed, the rich and the powerful will get away scotch free.

This is the cousin that he didn't like. I don't think they will get protection from PM Hun Sen. PM Hun Sen gain popularity at get rid of the bad cousin at the same time. Why not? It is a win win situation. By the way, this is not a show trial, this is real. Any cousin that wanted to double cross Hun Sen, you will ended up as food for the crocodile

11:02 PM, your rationale makes a lot of sense. I think you are right on this one. Remember Kauv Samuth, a police captain who was Hun Sen's brother-in-law? He was assassinated in 1996, presumably under the order of Hun Sen because someone said he dare to stand up/disobey to Hun Sen. Some said Hun Sen fear Kauv Samuth will assassinate him, so he arranged for Kauv Samuth to be assassinated first.
