Indonesian officers visit disputed Thai-Cambodia area

Thai tanks head to the frontlines during the heights of the fighting from 4-7 February.

Voice of Vietnam

A five-member Indonesian military team visited the disputed Thai-Cambodian border area on February 26 to pave the way for deployment of Indonesian observers in the region, a senior Cambodian defence official said.

Gen. Neang Phat, Deputy Minister of the National Defense of Cambodia, told Kyodo News by telephone that the Indonesian advance team visited the ancient temple of Preah Vihear and the surrounding area to find a suitable location for deployment of observers who will monitor the implementation of a ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand.

He expressed his hope that the Indonesian observers will start their work soon.

At an ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting in Jakarta on February 22, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to invite Indonesia, which is the current ASEAN Chair, to send observers to monitor the long-term ceasefire agreement between the two neighbours.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said Indonesia will dispatch two separate teams to Cambodia and Thailand, each consisting of 15 to 20 military personnel and civilians.

In related news, the Cambodian news agency AKP quoted Prime Minister Hun Sen at a annual meeting of the Ministry of Home Affairs on February 25 saying that he suggested Indonesia maintain its role as an observer until Cambodia takes over the rotating ASEAN Chair in 2012.

Don't get panic with Thai Toy Tanks! They can be blown up by Javelin anti-tank guided missile...I think Cambodia got plenty of those new high tech Anti-tank Missile from Russia/China recently..

I would be nice to have at least 5 MIG-23s at the cost of $3.5 million each for a total of $17.5 million. That is definitely affordable. At least we have something for the Siem to think twice about air superiority.

9:27 AM, Is it true that MIG-23s cost $3.5 million each. If so, Cambodia can afford more than 20 easy. But the problem is the pilots. Need more than 3 years to train them fully. Also these MIG-23s are obsolete, true? However, it's better than nothing. But remember, all Thai jet fighters are new and very modern, equipped with the most up-to-date technology.

10:26Am, yes It depends on what you want with them, it can cost up to $6.6 million each if you want the latest technology. Yes they are kind of obsolete compare to the Siem Air Force. But they are still formidable. Remember it's not the plan, it's the skills of the pilot and technology that in most part, determine the outcome of any battle. It does takes awhile to fly these awsome machines but we did have a squadron of Mig-21 before they were scrape due to maintenance and no money. There are plenty of capable young pilots who can fly these machines. Keep in mind, we are forming the flight squadron for defending our sovereignty only, we're not territorial thievery like the Siems. We only need them to intercept incoming F-16s and JAS-39 Gripens.
